Accidents are a part of life, and as much as we’d like to avoid them, sometimes the worst happens and you find yourself in need of some help. It is a good idea to understand the basics about dental emergencies and how to handle them just in case you or a loved one ends up needing the information. That’s why we’re going to take the time to write about some of the more common dental emergencies and how you can handle them. In general, however, keep in mind that if the situation is dire and we are not open, it is time to visit the emergency room for help.

What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?

This is one of the most severe accidents that can happen, and unfortunately it is not quite as uncommon as we would like to believe. This is especially true if you are an avid sports player, but note that there are many kinds of accidents that could lead to this kind of issue. The most important thing you can do if you knock out a tooth is to find the tooth and keep it moist. You can do this by gently placing it back in the socket (do not touch the root). If that is not possible, then keep it either between your gums and your cheek, in a product that is made to preserve teeth and bears the ADA Seal of Acceptance, or in a glass of milk. The next thing you should do is visit us immediately.

What should I do if my tooth is cracked?

Cracked teeth generally occur as a result of trauma, much like knocking a tooth out completely. To help with this kind of problem, the first thing you should do is to rinse your mouth out with warm water to help keep the area clean. Be aware of swelling, as that is likely to occur as a result of whatever trauma cracked your tooth. Place cold compresses on the area to help reduce or avoid swelling. Visit us as soon as possible.

What should I do if something is stuck in my teeth?

If you are experiencing a situation where there is something caught in your teeth or in your mouth, try removing it with floss. Be gentle, and do not use anything pointed or sharp as this can inadvertently make the situation even worse by damaging your teeth or your gums. If you cannot remove the object in question, then you should visit us as quickly as possible to avoid a potential infection or any other kind of damage.

What should I do if I bite my lip or my tongue?

If you bite your lip or your tongue, the first thing to do is to use water to gently help clean the area. Place a cold compress on the affected part of your mouth or face. If bleeding doesn’t stop or if there is a lot of it, you should go visit us or the emergency room.
